Restoring Reverie

: The Art of Restoring & Sailing a Classic Wooden Sailboat

About The Boat

It has taken a bit of sleuthing to ascertain Reverie’s design. We were told the boat was designed by K. Aage Nielsen.  Information about the designs of K. Aage Nielsen is scant, at best.  His estate has carefully guarded his plans which has made researching the boat difficult.  There is no builders plate, just “5 tn.” engraved in the fore hatch coaming to designate her displacement.  That, along with her length, beam and draft coincide with information in the Sparkman & Stephens archive of the “1940 Islander”, design # 316 drawn by K. Aage Nielsen when he worked in their Boston office.

It is my guess that someone bought the plans and had the boat made or made it themselves.  There was no need to have a famous builder’s plate in this boat for us to undertake her restoration.  It was obvious she was well-built and that was all that mattered.
